Web Apps Frequently Asked Questions
The basics of browser-based apps. Full FAQ →
What counts as a web app?
Any real application that runs in your browser — a photo editor, a code sandbox, a file converter, a multiplayer game. Not a landing page, not a download link: the work happens in the browser tab. Some are installable to your home screen or desktop, but that's a bonus, never a requirement for listing.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Every app listed here runs directly in the browser — click 'Open App' and start working. Some apps additionally offer a browser install prompt (Chrome/Edge: menu → Install; Safari iOS: Share → Add to Home Screen), which we flag with the 'Installable' badge.
Are all web apps free?
Most listings are free or have a free tier. We tag every entry with a 'Free' badge when the app costs nothing for normal use. Some are paid software — clearly indicated.
Why use a web app instead of installing software?
Nothing to download, nothing to update, works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebooks, and you can try it in ten seconds. For a huge class of tools — editors, converters, whiteboards, dev utilities — modern browser tech matches desktop software.
Do web apps work offline?
Some do. Apps that explicitly cache for offline use are flagged with the 'Offline' badge in the directory. Apps that need a live connection (multiplayer, streaming, server-side processing) won't work offline.
How does Web Apps Directory pick what to list?
Every listing is human-reviewed against four criteria: a real app that works in the browser (not a brochure site), genuine value, HTTPS and currently working, honest behaviour. We reject ~30% of standard submissions. No paid placement without a 'Sponsored' label.
